PRESENTATIONS FOR CHILDREN

It is exciting for Joanne to share with audiences, especially children, the one most important thing she has learned about writing a story. *Writing is a magical, crazy, mysterious process,* she says, *but it's the same process for everyone, young or older, teacher or student, published or unpublished. We all start with a blank page, often a scared feeling inside, and observations and memories taken straight from our own lives.* In her presentations, she shows kids exactly how that magic happens for her, explains some of its mysteries, and gives lots of surprising tips to inspire stories.

Her visit to a school may include:

* "Sharing Writers' Secrets" for grades 2 and up.

* (A 60-minute interactive talk using her cat puppet, a slide presentation, readings, and student participation; the grade division and the size of the audience is at the school's discretion.)

* "How I Write My Books" for K-1.

* (A 20 to 30 minute interactive talk using her cat puppet, readings, and student participation.)

* Classroom-ready handouts:

(1) "Draw Your Own Street" based on her presentation

(2) "Joanne Rocklin's Magic Story Builders"

* She speaks to large assemblies as well as smaller groups.

* Book signings

* Written correspondence after her visit

PRESENTATIONS FOR ADULTS

Joanne has a slide presentation that highlights her work as an author, which she give to kids but it can be used with adults, as well as an informal (no slides) presentation.

She also has a presentation emphasizing the connection between the structure of children's books and its relation to developmental needs (using her insights as a psychologist.).

PLEASE PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS FOR APPEARANCES

Joanne brings her own projector and laptop most of the time, but it would be helpful if you could have the following items on hand:

* a heavy extension cord (these are usually orange)

* a power strip

* an Elmo projector if the school has one

* a working projector if an Elmo projector is not available

* a microphone if she's speaking to large groups

* bottled drinking water

HONORARIUM AND NUMBER OF PRESENTATIONS PER DAY

Ms. Rocklin's honorarium is due the end of the day on the last day of her appearance.

For the shorter K-1 session, the cost is $200 per session.

For older kids, her fee is $400 per slide presentation and she can do up to but no more than three a day. However, she can also facilitate an additional hands-on writing session with a class or group of selected upper grade students for $400 as long as the writing students have been present at one of the slide presentations.

No matter the grade level, the maximum number of presentations she can do per day is five (5).

For out-of-town visits, her minimum number of sessions would be one 20 to 30 minute session with no slides for K-1 and two slide presentations for the older kids. Local visits may vary.

In addition to her fee, the hosting school or organization would also be responsible for her expenses (travel, hotel, and meals).

For further information, especially about the expenses (travel, hotel, and meals), click the "Arrange An Appearance" button and see "General Information on the Cost of an Author Appearance" as well as the 'Honorariums' section near the bottom of "How to Plan an Author Appearance."

*Thank you again for one of the finest author visits I've ever seen (in many years of librarianship). You had a very "lively" crowd engaged and entertained while giving them excellent advice about writing....*
