Mary Lankford's Author Visits

Objectives: To both show and tell students about the process of writing a book, from idea to published book. To demonstrate how reading and writing can improve grades, and provide students with experiences they might never have. To demonstrate to teachers (while she is showing students) how they can continue to promote reading and writing.

Schedule: If she spends a full day in a school, she presents two programs in the morning and one program in the afternoon. The host can arrange the schedule to best suit student/teacher schedules.

Program Length: Each program is approximately 40 minutes.

Publicity: Mary Lankford can provide a flyer that can be duplicated to send home with students. This flyer shows cost of the books (determined by school) and also invites parents to attend the program.

Presentation: Presentations are much better when working with one grade level at a time ø either in an activity room, or in the library. The program is geared to grades 3-6.

Workshops: Workshops for teachers and/or librarians on subjects ranging from time management to collection development to leadership are available.  Ms. Lankford can also offer power point presentations on these subjects as well.

Book Sales: If you prefer Ms. Lankford to bring the books to be sold, she can do this, and her husband will assist with sales. Whether books are ordered through the publisher or she brings the books herself, she needs an estimation of the number of books needed as soon as possible.

Honorarium: The check for her honorarium should be presented to Ms. Lankford on the last day after her final program. Her honorarium ranges between $500 and $1,000 a day, plus expenses, depending on: location, how many sessions a day you'd like her to do, whether she's doing presentations or workshops, and if she's doing workshops, how intensive the organization would like the workshop to be.

For further information, especially about the expenses (travel, hotel, and meals), click the "Arrange An Appearance" button and see "General Information on the Cost of an Author Appearance" as well as the 'Honorariums' section near the bottom of "How to Plan an Author Appearance."
