Susan Jeffer's Appearances

Ms. Jeffers enjoys speaking to children at schools and speaking to teachers and librarians at workshops and conferences.

School visits - When she goes to schools, she gives two 45-minute talks, which can be geared for grades 1-12.  She prefers to do these two small or large group presentations in the morning (she likes to draw with the students, so do please be prepared for this).  In the afternoon, she likes to do two classroom visits.

Presentations - Her presentations vary.  She especially likes talking about writing, and how drawing taps the writer's ability to create word images.  Writers "see" their stories, and drawing helps them look.  Ms. Jeffers works with students and teachers to show them how writing and art are interconnected and enchance each other.

She enjoys working with the English teacher and/or the art teacher and looking at students' work. She describes in detail how she makes her own books, from the first emotional connection to the story to the last line of the page. Her hope is that children will be encouraged to express themselves with their drawing and writing, and to have the unique satisfaction that art and stories can bring.

Conferences - Ms. Jeffers is also available for library and educational conferences.  Again, her presentations vary.  She often emphasizes the many connections between writing and artwork.  She is flexible and can gear her talks to specific subjects upon request,

Ms. Jeffers' honorarium should be presented to her at the end of her last program on the last day.  Generally speaking, her honorarium is $1,800 a day, plus expenses, for school visits; and $2,500 a day, plus expenses, for conferences.  The honorarium may be negotiable, so please contact Balkin Buddies with information about your budget and needs.
