One
feature that is very popular is
doing my book talks dressed as characters from my books. As
I write each book, I pick out a minor character to portray
for the kids by putting on a blouse or apron. I
tell them about the book as the character. I also tell the kids about my books, my writing experiences, and about tips for their own writing.
I'm also available to teach creative writing in writing workshops.
SIZE OF AUDIENCE:
I
do not mind how big the groups are as long as they are
well supervised. In many schools, I have done writing
workshops with smaller groups of children. The
writing workshops are best when the children have heard
my general presentation first.
AGE OF AUDIENCE:
I have talked to little kids, but because they can't read my books, I like talking to grades 3-10 best.
SESSIONS
FOR EDUCATORS AND ADULTS:
I only need a long table on which to display my books. Having a strong "teacher voice," I rarely need sound equipment except in auditoriums or very large groups. My costume changes are only garments slipped over my regular dress and are done on the spot, so I won't need a changing room.
HONORARIUM:
$1,000 a day, plus expenses, and I do 5 sessions a day. This honorarium applies no matter how many sessions I do or how far I have to travel. So I'll do fewer sessions if you like, but I'd suggest you take advantage of the 5 full sessions. If no books are ordered, the honorarium is $1,200 a day plus expenses.
